Yesterday Linux Mint team released its KDE based distribution and again they have done marvelous job with it. According to DistroWatch there has been ever increasing rise in popularity of this distro and it beats Debian, Mandriva and OpenSUSE by far in popularity rating.
My experience with Linux Mint has always been placid. The distro installs itself like a smoothie, works like a charm and never gave me any trouble with updating and other minor adjustments that i made to it.
Unlike its father distro Ubuntu, Mint comes with most of the required application for multimedia and internet usages, and is most suited for the users who do not want to put a lot of efforts in customization and tweaking. The recent release has an interesting addition. The software manager, which somewhat looks like Synaptic for Ubuntu, shows stats like reviews, average rating, number of views. It also shows a detailed information of the application along with a screen-shot, which comes in handy. Looks and feel of KDE desktop environment was also enhanced by Mint team and it works like wonder.
There are some existing problems though, as mentioned in the release note. Because of compatibility issues, Linux Mint 8 comes without a Windows installer. The File Uploader introduced in Linux Mint 8 isn’t working well under KDE.If you have more than 3.5GB of RAM, install the linux-generic-pae kernel for your memory to be fully detected and used by the system.
In spite of the issues this distro has tremendous user response and if things go its way, one day it would be most popular home Linux distro.
