Mozilla finally released ver 1.0 of its Weave Project. This project is aimed at development of an add-on which could act as a synchronization tool, as in case of Opera with Opera Links. Mozilla has taken it way beyond just bookmark synchronization and incorporated a whole new level of web experience with other features like password, history and tab synchronization. It synchronizes content on all the devices running either Firefox or Fennec mobile browser by Mozilla.
Weave has extremely light weight core and let the maintenance of multiple Firefox installs very smooth. One can switch from one terminal to another without loosing much work. Firefox keeps a note of what the user was working at and what tabs did he open and next time browser connects over the internet, Weave synchronizes Firefox with the server keeping the state of the browser as it was previously. Even though Xmarks provide these feature of bookmark synchronization and password synchronization across different browsers, but as Weave it doesn’t provide synchronization of tabs, site discovery and other value added services.
Security is one big issue when it comes to password synchronization. Mozilla has taken care of this problem with a 256bit AES encryption; in simpler words, by a very secure means of sending data over the internet. And if someone questions the intent of keeping all passwords at one place in the hands of guardian angel; for them Mozilla has also provided the means to set up their own synchronization servers.
Future releases are expected to sync Firefox addons, search plugins and other customizations too. Once these other features are incorporated into the future builds it would extremely simple and quick task of setting up Firefox at fully customized and efficient level.
Weave is an Open Source product and distributed under GPL. Its free to download and can be downloaded from here
